9th Grade Lit and Comp: Tuesday, March 31, 2020

Good morning everyone! Most of the directions below are the same as they were yesterday - you're going to continue work on your Multi-Genre project today. However, before you go back to working on your project let's talk about quotes.

As you should know by now, you need to include at least 2 quotes from the play in each of your genre pieces - that means you will have AT LEAST 10 QUOTES throughout your entire project. When taking a quote from the play, put it in quotation marks AND cite the act and scene the quote is from in parentheses. Here is an example using a quote at Romeo says about Rosaline during Act 1, scene 5:

Rosaline had "sworn off love, and that promise has left [Romeo] alive but dead" (Act 1, scene 5).

Go back into your genre pieces and make sure that you have 2 quotes in ALL 5 of your genre pieces. Remember, this is the order everything in your Word Document should be in:
    1. Cover Page
    2. Table of Contents
    3. Act I Symbol Page
    4. Genre Piece 1 - Newspaper
    5. Act II Symbol Page
    6. Genre Piece 2 - Journal/Diary Entry
    7. Act III Symbol Page
    8. Genre Piece 3 - Poem
    9. Act IV Symbol Page
    10. Genre Piece 4 - Choice Genre 1
    11. Act V Symbol Page
    12. Genre Piece 4 - Choice Genre 2
**Please note: I will not be doing progress checks everyday, but I have broken the project down into manageable pieces that you should be able to complete the day they are assigned. It is in your best interest to stay on top of the assigned work and not leave the entire project for last minute.**

Please let me know if you have any trouble accessing any links or submitting your assignments. Remember that I am available via email (amanda.egbert@cobbk12.org) and through Remind.

    Today's Work:

    • Continue working on your project.
    • Look at the rubric linked above.
    • Look at last week's blog posts for specific instructions for each genre piece.
      • **Remember: Each genre piece must reference specific characters, events/scenes, and at least two quotes from Romeo and Juliet.**
    • Make sure you have a Symbol Page for each act in Romeo and Juliet
      • In front of each genre piece, you will have a page where you must include one symbol that relates to the acts in the play. The symbol should be creative, colorful, and relate to the act. The pace should be clearly labeled with the act number (Act I, Act II, Act III, etc.) and include a paragraph (4 - 5 complete sentences) that explains why the symbol was chosen to represent the act.
      • Your Act I Symbol Page should be in front of your Genre Piece 1, your Act II Symbol Page should be in front of your Genre Piece 2, etc.
    • Make sure your Cover Page has a creative and colorful image that relates to the play and the required information (see above).
    • Make sure your Table of Contents is in order (follow the outline at the top of this blog post) and has the correct page numbers listed for each part of the project.

    What's Due Today:
    • Continue working on your Multi-Genre Project. It is due on turnitin.com on Wednesday, April 1.

9th Grade Lit and Comp: Friday, March 27, 2020

Good morning everyone! Happy Friday! No video for today because you're going to be working on your 2nd choice genre piece (genre piece 5) today. The options are near the bottom of the blog post. Remember, you need to choose TWO options from the list. At this point you should have the following in your Word Document:
        1. Cover Page
        2. Table of Contents
        3. Act I Symbol Page
        4. Genre Piece 1 - Newspaper
        5. Act II Symbol Page
        6. Genre Piece 2 - Journal/Diary Entry
        7. Act III Symbol Page
        8. Genre Piece 3 - Poem
        9. Act IV Symbol Page
        10. Genre Piece 4 - Choice Genre 1
        Today,  focus on:
        • Act V Symbol Page
        • Genre Piece 4 - Choice Genre 2
**Please note: I will not be doing progress checks everyday, but I have broken the project down into manageable pieces that you should be able to complete the day they are assigned. It is in your best interest to stay on top of the assigned work and not leave the entire project for last minute.**

        Today's Genre Piece:

Choice Genres: You need to choose TWO of them for this project.

**Remember: Each genre piece must reference specific characters, events/scenes, and at least two quotes from Romeo and Juliet.**

        • Soundtrack: You're making a soundtrack of the play. You must choose four songs that you feel can be applied to four different scenes, whether it's through the events happening in the scene, and/or the characters in the scene. You must write a paragraph (4-6 complete sentences) for each song including the song's title and artist, a summary of the scene in which this song would fit, and an explanation of why how this song relates to the play, characters, and/or scene.

        • Eulogy: Choose a character who has died from Romeo and Juliet and eulogize them. A eulogy is a tribute to someone who has died by honoring or praising them. This should be from the point of view from a character who cared about the person who has died (for example: Romeo writing a eulogy for Mercutio). You will want to reference who the character was, their good qualities, what they meant to the character giving the eulogy, and how they will be missed. Remember to reference specific examples form Romeo and Juliet. Your eulogy must be 300-450 words long.

        • Letter: Write a letter from the point of view of a character in the play to another character in the play. Your letter should be written in 1st person point of view. You should start by saying, “Dear…” In this letter you must reference specific events and what is happening, along with referencing characters from the book. This should read like a friend writing to another friend, so it can be informal. Your letter must be 300-450 words long.

        • Character Map: Create a visual character map showing the important characters from the play. Include the following characters: Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Tybalt, Juliet, The Nurse, Lord Montague, Lady Montague, Romeo, Benvolio, Prince, Paris, Mercutio, and Friar Laurence. Each character should have a symbol or character drawing with description of who they are and their importance (2-3 sentences). Make sure characters are divided by family but also make sure you show how characters from both families are connected.

        • Dialogue: Create a text message dialogue between two characters in the play. Their dialogues should stay true to their character and should have them discussing an event/scene that is happening in the play. You may include text language as long as it is school appropriate. Your dialogue must be two full pages in length since dialogue should go back and forth and shouldn’t be very long. Think of how your text boxes look for your own text messages and let that be your model.

        • Editorial: An editorial is a piece of writing that expresses an opinion about a current event or issue. The purpose of an editorial is to persuade and point out the hypocrisy or benefits of a given issue. Write an editorial based off something that happens in the play (for example: the feud between the families, the suicides of Romeo and Juliet, etc.) and give your opinion about how this made you feel, why you agree/disagree with this topic. Show evidence and give examples to why you think a certain way, and why those who disagree with you are wrong. Your editorial must be 300-450 words long.

        • ABC’s of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet: Write the ABC’s of Romeo and Juliet. You must think of a word (either a character, theme, place, etc.) that begins with each letter of the alphabet, and provide some information about that word. Picture, quote, definition. For example: “R is for Romeo," a drawing of Romeo, a brief description (2-3 Sentences) and/or a memorable quote from him. You must have at least 24 letters (I’m allowing you to skip two letters in case you get stuck).
**Remember: Each genre piece must reference specific characters, events/scenes, and at least two quotes from Romeo and Juliet.**

        What's Due Today:
        • Continue working on your Multi-Genre Project
          • Work on Genre Piece 5 - Choice Genre

As always, please remember to reach out to me directly if you have any personal worries or concerns about the assignments for this class. I know that working at home can be a rougher transition for some people than it is for others (I certainly am having my own troubles with staying focused 😅), so remember, while you should try to have your work done by the due dates posted on the blog, I will be extremely accommodating and flexible as we go through this virtual learning journey together - just keep me in the loop!

Today, is TED Talk Tuesday! You're going to do the same thing you did for TED Talk Tuesday last week. Also use today as a catch-up day for your Research Mini-Project if you are behind.

            Assignment for Today:

            What's Due Today?

Please let me know if you have any trouble accessing any links or submitting your assignments. Remember that I am available via email (amanda.egbert@cobbk12.org) and through Remind.

Good morning! Thank you to everyone who filled out the check-in form yesterday - it was good to hear from you about how you are doing! 😊

Remember this is something new for all of us, and I want to remind you again, that you are doing an amazing job!

As always, please remember to reach out to me directly if you have any personal worries or concerns about the assignments for this class. In yesterday's blog post, I introduced the Muti-Genre Project in two pretty detailed videos, please go back and watch them, if you haven't already. Today's video is a lot shorter as I will just be introducing the genre piece that you should be working on today.

**Please note: I will not be doing progress checks everyday, but I have broken the project down into manageable pieces that you should be able to complete the day they are assigned. It is in your best interest to stay on top of the assigned work and not leave the entire project for last minute.**

            Today's Genre Piece:
            • Journal Entry: Write a journal/diary entry from the point of view of a character from the play, using 1st person pronouns. You should reference specific information from the play and have your character explain their personal thoughts and feelings on what's going on in their life. You can write one long entry or two shorter entries (if you are writing two shorter entries, they need to be from the point of view of the SAME character), but your word count for this genre piece needs to be between 300-450 words.

**Remember: Each genre piece must reference specific characters, events/scenes, and at least two quotes from Romeo and Juliet.**

            What's Due Today:
            • Continue working on your Multi-Genre Project
              • Work on Genre Piece 2- Journal Entry

Good morning and happy Monday! Thank you to everyone who sent me updates or meme over the weekend - I really appreciated them! Today we're going to continue working on the project for the Research Mini-Unit.

            Research Mini-Project Directions:

            Assignment for Today:
            1. Instructions for Day 1
            2. Please Note: There are some changes to the Project Template that I discussed in today's video. The document linked is the latest and most up-to-date template.
            3. Research Impact of COVID-19:
              1. What has been the response of the United States government to COVID-19?
              2. How is COVID-19 affecting people who live in the United States?
            4. You must use 3 sources for BOTH questions today. Make sure you copy the links of ALL of the articles into your document.
            Resources for Today's Questions:
When you click on the links below, it will bring you to a page with three articles: one from a right-leaning source, one from a centrist source, and one from a left-leaning source. You will read ALL three of these articles and check them against each other to gather your information for the questions today.
            What's Due Today?
            • Work on the Research Project
            • Fill out the Check-In Form (yes, I know I asked you to check in on Friday, but I only got a handful of responses - I think this is an easier format)

9th Grade Lit and Comp: Monday, March 23, 2020

Good morning! Welcome to week 2 of virtual learning! Over the next week and a half, we are going to work on wrapping up The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet with a Multi-Genre Project. Today, I will post the directions, schedule, and rubric for the project as well as the genre focus for today. Each day, I will post instructions for a new genre that you will be working on for the day.

**Please note: I will not be doing progress checks everyday, but I have broken the project down into manageable pieces that you should be able to complete the day they are assigned. It is in your best interest to stay on top of the assigned work and not leave the entire project for last minute.**

            Instructions for the Multi-Genre Project:

How to Format Your Document and Explanation of Genre 1:

            Today's Genre Piece:
            • Newspaper: Write a newspaper article about an event that occurred in the play. Your genre piece should look and read like a newspaper article. You should have a newspaper header (make up a name for your newspaper that is related to the play), a title for the article, and who the article is written by.

In this article, you should take on a journalistic tone. You should write in 3rd person objective (do not take the side of either of the feuding families); you’re telling the public about an incident that has happened in the play. You may pick any event from any act or scene in the play. The article should be between 300-450 words and formatted into two columns to better achieve the newspaper feel. Remember you are referencing events/a scene from the play. You want to include quotes, which the “reporter” received from people at the scene.

**Remember: Each genre piece must reference specific characters, events/scenes, and at least two quotes from Romeo and Juliet.**

I advise you to also use today as a catch-up day. Look back at the posts from earlier this week and see where you are. What do you have left to do? Do you have questions? Take time today to assess what you need to do next - not just for this class but for all of your classes.

Okay, that's all I have for this post today. Instructions for the research mini-unit to come tomorrow. Be kind to yourself. :)

Good morning! Thank you so much to everyone who submitted their Night Tests yesterday! I am also really excited to look through your TED Talk Tuesday responses and add some of those to my "to watch" list. :)

Today, before we start on our research mini-unit on different diseases, I think it's important to look at this moment in time and the pandemic that the world is currently facing. Let's talk about the details.

            Assignment for Today:
Want to learn more about coronavirus?
This is not required, but if you are interested in learning more about the coronavirus in more detail, here is the link to the Sawbones episode where Sydnee and Justin talk about it for the first time on their podcast in February. (To be clear: Please note that listening to this second podcast is optional, but listening to the one about quarantines and reading the article are NOT optional).

            Fun Shakespeare Fact!
Widespread disease like the plague had a big influence on Shakespeare's writing. You might have noticed in Act III that Mercutio "wishes a plague" on the Houses of Montague and Capulet and that in Act V, Friar John wasn't able to get the letter to Romeo in time because he was quarantined in order to stop the spread of the disease. Both of these events, though relatively minor in the scenes where they occur, impact the play in pretty significant ways. Here is an article about how the plague influenced Shakespeare (no, you are not required to read it if you don't want to).

            Today's Assignment:
            • Catch-up on reading Romeo and Juliet
              1. You should have read the entire play by the end of today.
              2. Finish working on Graphic Organizer
                • Make sure you have a picture, a quote, and a 2-3 sentence summary for EVERY scene.
                • Go back and work on the front page of your packet. Complete the character chart, draw a symbol that represents the overall idea of the play (not a heart or tombstone please!), and then answer the question about foils.

            What's Due Today?
