August 27-31: 10th Grade World Lit

This Week: We will continue our unit on Heroes and Archetypes by reading and analyzing excerpts from The Epic of Gilgamesh. We will also work on unit 2 vocab in preparation of our test on Friday. Due to Early Release, we will not meet on Wednesday.

August 20-24: 10th Grade World Lit

This Week: We will start our unit on Heroes and Archetypes by reading and analyzing excerpts from Books 1 and 6 of The Iliad. On Thursday, we will construct dual body biographies, comparing and contrasting the Greek hero Achilles to the Trojan hero Hector. We will close out our week with a discussion about these heroes.

August 20-24: 9th Grade Literature & Composition

This Week: We will read and analyze the short story, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. As we read, we will be looking for examples of direct and indirect characterization that Connell uses to reveal the personalities of the characters in the story. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will construct dual body biographies comparing and contrasting Rainsford and Zaroff. On Friday, we will take a look at all the resources the media center has to offer.

August 13-17: 10th Grade World Lit

This Week: We will finish up summer reading with a mini-project for The Lord of the Flies on Monday and Tuesday and an in-class writing assessment on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will begin our short texts unit with an introduction to the heroes and archetypes and finish off the week with a documentary about a few of the archetypes we will encounter throughout this unit.

August 6-10: 10th Grade World Literature

This week: Thank you for a great start to the year! Be sure to have your vocab book in class on Monday - we will learn the words on Monday and complete the exercises in Unit 1 throughout the week. There will be a quiz over Unit 1 words on Friday. After our vocab activities on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, you will have an opportunity to work on your summer reading assignments, so be sure to bring your copy of The Lord of the Flies this week.

If you haven't already turned in your signed syllabus, it is due Wednesday, August 8.

It was great to meet you all today! I am looking forward to working with everyone throughout the course of this semester. Please review the resources in my previous blog post, if you have any questions about the summer reading assignment for your class.

Also, remember to bring in $15 cash or check (made out to Lassiter High School) if you still need to purchase a copy of the vocabulary book.

Wednesday, August 1: Go over syllabus, Getting to Know You questionnaire, Coat of Arms activity
Thursday, August 2: Go over safety persuasions, finish Coat of Arms
Friday, August 3: Review summer reading + supplementary assignment, time in class to work on summer reading activities. Bring a copy of your summer reading book to class with you on Friday.
